You must be on the lookout for scams because they exist in abundance. When trying to decide whether a certificate or degree program is legit, look for these warning signs:

1. Promising certification in an unusually short amount of time

2. Promising unrealistic wages for future employment

3. Requests for very large OR very small amounts of money up front

Always check to see if the program you are investigating is accredited by a professional organization. The CAHIIM website provides a place to search for an accredited program by name, state, education level and distance learning availability. Another good step would be to check with the Better Business Bureau and research the program to see what people are saying about it.
